Viscosupplementation

Viscosupplementation requires injection of hyaluronic acid into the joint space to help recreate the cushioning inside the joints, which are usually lined with cartilage.

With ageing and the degenerative changes caused by osteoarthritis, this cartilage is worn down and causes pain, swelling and stiffness. This makes walking and other weightbearing activities extremely painful.

Viscosupplementation is most commonly done inside the knee capsule for osteoarthritis but can also be used in other areas.

Many patients may still ultimately go on to require knee replacements however our first resort is always to try the minimally-invasive options before referring you for surgery.

Viscosupplementation may also be used in conjunction with Platelet-Rich Plasma

Platelet-Rich Plasma

Platelet-Rich Plasma works by using the body’s own platelets to stimulate tissue repair and healing. Some research suggests that Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) may be an effective choice for suffers of Osteoarthritis in the knees.

PRP works differently from Viscosupplementation in that it stimulates the body to produce its own collagen, helping to maintain and even to heal the existing cartilage and soft tissue.

It can work as a stand-alone treatment, or in conjunction with Viscosupplementation injections to create extra cushioning in the joint space.

Fat Transfer

Fat harvest and transfer is an exciting new area of Regenerative Medicine that shows great promise in treating a range of foot and lower limb issues.

Typically used in facial aesthetics, fat transfer is also of benefit in musculoskeletal condiions for repairing damaged tissue in joint spaces. It can also be used to replace volume under the ball and heels of the feet, as with our Footlift procedure.
